“One afternoon, Dot and I drove to our favorite spot in Malibu, and as we took in our evening and twisting surroundings, I felt the need to write a track that captured some of that romance. The winding mountain roads… the beacons out at sea… the wind running through our hair after I lowered the top… the experience of driving to the beach in California, especially as day blends into night, is unlike anything else. Those sunsets – the beach at night – yeah, that orange to red to blue to dark shift that slowly happens above is arranged in neat little phrases with every shift of the gears. A scenic drive through places like Malibu and along eerie Mulholland, with a six-speed manual transmission, is the way to do it.”
